Joseph Poma was born on December 5, 1921 in Buesto Palizzolo, Sicily, Italy to Vito and Paola (nee Aiuto) Poma. Guiseppe, his Italian name, was the second youngest of 4 children. His father died when he was two years and his mother never remarried, raising four children on her own. Joseph was apprenticed to a barber at age 12, and eventually became one himself, complete with his own shop. That ended when World War II broke out and Joseph was drafted into the Italian Army. He spent three years in a POW camp until he escaped back to his hometown. There he resumed his barber career. He married the love of his life, Giovannina, "Jennie." on April 3, 1948 in Buesto Palizzolo. Attracted by the chance for a better life in the U.S., Jennie returned to Detroit in 1948 and Joseph followed six months later. He worked as a barber. As the auto plants were booming to meet the pent-up demand for autos, Joseph worked for Chrysler then Ford Motor, retiring from Ford Motor Company in 1981, after 31 years of service.
In his retirement years, Joseph grew and sold Christmas trees up in Kalkaska. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed dancing and music, especially Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and Al Martino.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jennie; his children, Pauline (Nelson) Poma, Vito (Filocia) and Frank (Karen) Poma and his grandchildren, Paulette, John, Joseph, Jenny and Azario. He is also survived by his sisters, Giovanna (John) Culcasi and Maria Poma. He was predeceased by his sister, Giuseppa Poma.
