Donald Jude Sloan, a resident of Clinton Township, died peacefully at home on April 27, 2012. He was 83. Mr. Sloan was born at home in Detroit on October 20, 1928. He graduated from St. Martin's High School in 1946, enlisted in the Navy where he served on submarines. After the Navy, Mr. Sloan went on receive two college degrees: his Bachelor's from St. Mary's College (Winona, MN) and his Master's from the University of Detroit.
Mr. Sloan spent his entire career as an educator, first as a teacher, then coach and finally in administration, all with the Archdiocese of Detroit. He was principal of Our Lady Star of the Sea High School (Grosse Pointe) from 1969 to 1989. He finished his career there as Chancellor, retiring in 1990.
Mr. Sloan also served in several capacities of different professional organizations including the Michigan State Board of Education and the Executive Athletic Board of the Archdiocese of Detroit. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Coaching was Mr. Sloan's favorite passion. He co-founded the Catholic Coaches Association and the Catholic Coaches Hall of Fame. He coached all three sports – football, basketball and baseball -- at Servite High School (Detroit), eventually promoted to Athletic Director in 1963. His favorite team, without a doubt, was Notre Dame. He loved everything and anything connected with the school.
Being a grandfather was very special to Mr. Sloan. He was blessed with 19 and one great-grandchild. He attended many of their games and was very involved in their lives, his family said. They have planned a special service Monday evening to remember their grandfather.
Show tunes were a favorite of Mr. Sloan and they will be heard at his visitation.
Mr. Sloan is survived by his seven children: Donald, Denise (Philip) Keller, Mary (Ronald) O'Connor, Laura (Robert) Reid, Michael (Lisa), Maureen Addis and Lisa (Robert) Andrews. Mr. Sloan's 19 grandchildren also surviving him are Michael, Meghan and Shannon Sloan; Kathleen and Colette Keller; Lindsay, Lauren and Ronnie O'Connor; Danielle and Chloe Reid; Alex, Jeff and Danny Sloan; Ryan, Emily, Morgan and Brandon Addis; and Douglas and Kaitlyn Andrews. Mr. Sloan is also survived by his former wife, Barbara Sloan and his sister, Peggy Aiuto.
Following services, cremation will take place. An inurnment and military honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery is planned for a later date.
