It is with great sadness that the family of Scott Baerman of Mt. Clemens, Mich., announces his sudden death from a heart attack in Alpena, Mich., one day after his 50th birthday celebration. Scott was born on June 29, 1964, in Racine, Wis. He graduated from West Bloomfield High School in 1982 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Package Engineering from Michigan State University in 1986. He played for the MSU Rugby Club for three years. He married Jill Pace on Sept. 12, 1992.
After a career in the packaging engineering field, Scott became a stay-at-home dad in 2002 with daughters Molly and Abby, and which continued after the birth of daughter Jane and son Nate. Besides taking care of the children as a full-time father, he volunteered at Walt Disney Elementary School in Clinton Township (Fraser Public Schools) and in the community. His volunteer work at the school included monitoring the parking lot before and after school to assure the safety of the children; chaperoning field trips; coaching the Science Olympiad Team and chaperoning the sixth grade camp. He supported the Lakers Aquatic Club (all four children involved) as well as the young people in the St. Louis Religious Education Program transporting them to their community service work.
On June 19 he was recognized as one of the 70 men and women honored by the Macomb County Board of Commissioners during its annual Volunteer Recognition event for people who donated 150 hours or more to their local community or organization in 2013. Scott was recognized for more than 400 volunteer hours.

Scott's father recalls helping him cook as a young boy and then watching him eventually become a master chef. His children were especially fond of his homemade pizza, seasoned grilled potatoes, potato soup and croutons, bread pudding, chocolate chip and peanut butter bar cookies. On special occasions, like celebrating his wife's new position, he created a menu with a photo of their house and called it the Hilltop Sanitarium & Bistro—Where the truly committed go. At these times the menu included "victuals" like Pan Seared Pork Tenderloin in a Dijon Gorgonzola Cream Sauce, Bow Tie Pasta, Sugar Snap Pea Pods, and Fall Harvest Apple Bake with Crumble Top.
Scott's talents were evident to all of his family. He was artistic, an avid reader, a craftsman, a philosopher and historian, a fisherman; and most of all a humorist with a great knack for teasing. He had inside jokes for all of his children and there was a lot of laughter in the household. Known for what were called "Scottisms," some of his favorites were "man up," "age over beauty," "beating will continue until morale improves," and "if I weren't taken I'd marry myself." His oldest daughter Molly described him as a child at heart.
He will be lovingly remembered and cherished by his wife and best friend of 22 years, Jill Pace and terribly missed as a Great Dad by their four children, Molly, Abigail, Jane and Nate. He will be deeply missed by his parents Neil and Carol Baerman, Gaylord, Mich; his mother and father-in-law Elaine and Lou Pace, New Baltimore, Mich; sister Laurie (Dirk) Rankin, Virginia; sister Beth Baerman (Jim Gell), Farmington, Mich; and brother Christopher (Laurel), New Hampshire; sister-in-law Sharise Spellmon (Scott), Fort Hood, Texas; brother-in-laws Jeff Pace (Amy), Mt. Clemens, Mich; Steve Pace (Maggie), Burlington Vt; and Louis Pace (Pascale), Naperville, Ill; and 18 nieces and nephews.
